Abstract

Introduction: Conventional brain tumor treatments based on surgery, radiation, and systemic chemotherapy are often associated with high recurrence and poor prognosis. In recent decades, intra-arterial administration of anticancer drugs has been considered a suitable alternative to intravenous and oral administration.

Objective: To describe the main therapeutic modalities currently available based on the use of intra-arterial chemotherapy for the treatment of brain tumors.

Method: A literature review was conducted from June 2023 to May 2025. A total of 23 bibliographies were consulted, including original articles, case reports, and open-access systematic reviews in peer-reviewed academic publications from the following databases: SciELO, PubMed, and MedlinePlus. AND and OR were used as Boolean operators.

Conclusions: Existing strategies to promote the precision of intra-arterial drug delivery in clinical and experimental preoperative brain tumor therapy represent an important step forward in this regard. This confirms the feasibility of many of these approaches, although not in isolation but rather based on a rational combination of them. The basis for this optimization is a multidisciplinary and multimodal approach.
