Abstract

Introduction: Folic acid deficiency is linked to the development of neural tube defects, which pose significant risks to fetal well-being.

Objective: To identify pregnant women's knowledge of the importance of folic acid intake to prevent birth defects related to neural tube defects.

Methods: An observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study was conducted during the month of April 2025. The population consisted of pregnant women admitted to the "Tamara Bunke" Hospital in Santiago de Cuba. The non-probability sample consisted of 42 pregnant women who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria and were surveyed. The variables were age, gestational age, educational level, previous pregnancies, pregnancy planning, consultations, knowledge of neural tube defects, and folic acid intake.

Results: The age range predominated. 38 pregnant women (90.48%) were between 7 and 9 months old. 23.81% (n=10) were pregnant for the first time. 54.76% (n=23) did not plan their pregnancy. 71.43% (n=30) received more than 10 doses of folic acid. Consultations were conducted during their pregnancy. 35.71% (n=15) had no knowledge about neural tube defects. 71.43% (n=30) were aware of the benefits of folic acid, and 27 (64.29%) consumed it before and throughout their pregnancy.

Conclusions: The pregnant women surveyed had insufficient knowledge about folic acid and its benefits during pregnancy.
