Analysis of the scientific production in the Cuban Journal of Oncology

Abstract

Introduction: The Cuban Journal of Oncology is the official scientific publication of the Cuban Society of Oncology, Radiotherapy, and Nuclear Medicine. Its mission is to publish scientific research in the specialty, authored by both national and foreign contributors.

Objective: To characterize the contribution of the Cuban Journal of Oncology to scientific production.

Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive, observational bibliometric study was conducted between 2020 and 2024. The study population consisted of 89 articles, which constituted the entire research sample. Variables included: year of publication, number of authors, author affiliation, article type, bibliographic references, and article citation count. Descriptive statistics and Price’s Index were applied.

Results: The year 2021 had the highest scientific output (n=33; 37.8%). In terms of authorship, articles with five authors predominated (n=16; 16.85%). Most authors were affiliated with the University of Medical Sciences of Havana (n=458; 85.93%), while foreign authorship accounted for 3.56%. By publication type, Original Articles were the most frequent (n=54; 60.67%). These same original articles accumulated the highest number of bibliographic references (n=1740; 61.22%). Editorials stood out for achieving the highest Price’s Index (0.9).

Conclusions: The study highlights marked productivity in 2021 and institutional centralization at the University of Medical Sciences of Havana. Original articles predominate, with extensive use of references.
