Abstract

Introduction: Oral cancer is one of the most aggressive and deadly cancers. Lack of knowledge about cancer and its associated risk factors, unfavorable attitudes, and inadequate practices impact the timeliness of diagnosis and hinder the prognosis.

Objective: To identify the level of knowledge about oral cancer in patients attending Family Medical Office No. 1 of the Carlos J. Finlay Polyclinic, between January and March 2025.

Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional observational study was conducted among 150 adults attending Family Medical Office No. 1 in Songo La Maya, Santiago de Cuba, between January and March 2025. Surveys and interviews were conducted to assess knowledge about risk factors, warning signs, and preventive measures for oral health. The data were statistically processed, respecting ethical principles and inclusion, exclusion, and exit criteria.

Results: The majority of the participants were aged 31–45 years (n=58; 38.66%) and were female (n=77; 51.33%). The level of knowledge was inadequate in 59.33% of the participants (n=89). High school education was more common (n=55; 36.66%). Smoking was the most frequently associated risk factor (n=104; 69.33%), and ulcers were the main warning sign (n=107; 71.33%). Maintaining good oral health was associated with disease prevention in 114 patients (76%).

Conclusions: There was an alarming lack of knowledge about oral cancer in the study population, with the majority of participants reporting an insufficient level of knowledge.
